So today we became the proud new parents of three baby birds with one still waiting to hatch. This morning when I checked, Mum seemed to be hovering over the nest as opposed to sitting and later when she flew away, there they were. I’d like to report that they look really cute but that would be a bold-faced lie as they are the scraggliest, ugliest looking things you ever saw, like fluffy, squirmy caterpillars, but with hair in weird clumps and lots of bald patches! It’s very difficult to tell which end is up and they are bigger than I thought they would be seeing as they were squished into a pretty small egg. We’re trying our hardest not to stare too much as it freaks Mum out, but every time she flies off, the peanut gallery assembles. One is already squawking pretty loudly with its mouth in a classic O, waiting for food. The meal du jour appears to be not so fluffy, small green caterpillars which hopefully Mrs. Robin is plucking from my perennials.
When I wasn’t stalking the baby robins today, I pottered around in the garden which is looking the best its been in years if I say so myself. With all the rain followed by the sun, I swear if I put my ear down to the ground, I could actually hear the grass grow. So many of my Spring flowers are ready to bloom, mixtures of pinks, purples and blues. Except for the plants that Smokey the rabbit ate this morning! He made a bold bid for permanent freedom, jumping out of the run I had set up. Sarah and I spent almost an hour chasing him round the garden with him hiding under the deck, sneaking out to eat my plants, then hopping back under the deck before we could catch him. I hate to admit it, but I put an end to the excitement by bagging him with a bright blue swimming pool skimmer left over from years ago when we had one of those bigger than blow up kiddie pools. You never know when the strange things you keep are gonna come in handy!
And to cap off the day, Victoria, her friend and I went to the Mall to buy her a dress for her semi-formal 8th grade graduation. I was not looking forward to this as I could see endless traipsing around, whining and sulking and that’s just my behavior! But someone was smiling down on us as the first dress she tried on in Sears fit her, she liked it, it was on sale and I was persuaded to open a Sears credit card thus getting an instant rebate, making the whole thing a whopping great $14.99.
The babies are down for the night and all is well with the world!
Glad to hear the babies made it. Love your posts, as always!
